Overview
Teacher Simulator was part of an exercice given by our game design teacher. The point was to create a small game in the engine pico8 with no prior experience. I quickly had this arcade style game idea that would utilize the premade assets that was given to us. The game in itself wasn't really hard to make, and is pretty fun to push to it's limit ! It even include a funny easter egg ...
Experience
I haven't had this much fun making a game in months. The tools provided by pico8 are incredible and the sprite making was really fun. I managed to recreate a lot of my friends in-game (despite the limited palette) and it was hilarious. Believe it or not, the rather tight deadline (about 3 to 4h) wasn't an issue at all, it didn't took me long to understand the engine and to already have a somewhat working version of the game !
Possible improvements
- Scaling: The game is currently in a sort of fixed pace, it doesn't get any easier or harder as time goes on. Meaning good players lasts hours and bad players lasts seconds. I think adding a way for the speed (and points) to scale up as time goes on would make the game more fun and forgiving.
- Better movement system: The movement system works really good but it's a bit finnicky at times. I've had multiple people complain that it just felt wrong. I think it would be nice to rebuild it a bit to make it more controllable. It would also be a good opportunity to add a sprint or a dash !
- Music: I can't make music to save my life. This is the one thing that is really missing to make the game more fun, a sort of tense and silly music to really tie the game together. But alas, i'm only a game designer ...
Takeaways
This project taught me how to use my ressources efficiently and also how to use Pico8 ! Overall, great experience, lots of fun and i would 100% do it again.
